Down 3-0, Eichel Ties It on a Penalty Shot, Connelly Wins It: VGK 4, Toronto 3 (SO)
Vegas trailed 3-0 after nine minutes, Jack Eichel scored on a penalty shot to tie it, and Trevor Connelly's backhand in the shootout sent T-Mobile Arena home happy. Adin Hill was the reason this game was even winnable.
Vegas trailed 3-0, Adin Hill and the Knights had already allowed three goals in the opening nine minutes. The crowd at T-Mobile Arena was stunned into silence.
The First Period Was a Disaster — and Then It Wasn't
Jack Roslovic scored 34 seconds in. Easton Cowan made it 2-0 at 3:20. Nick Paul buried a third at 8:37. Three goals in under nine minutes, all even strength, all against Adin Hill.
Here's the thing about those three goals: they came in a nine-minute window and then Hill shut the door for the next 55 minutes. That's the story of his night. The early goals were real — Toronto was sharp and Vegas was flat — but Hill didn't let it spiral. He stopped everything after that. 21 saves on 24 shots (.875) over 64:40 of ice time. The save percentage looks modest because of the first period. The performance was not.
Mark Stone got one back at 17:36 of the first — Jack Eichel with the assist, his ninth of the season through five games — and suddenly Vegas had a pulse heading to the second.
Eichel's Penalty Shot Is the Moment of the Night
Brett Howden narrowed the Toronto lead to one at 1:12 of the second. Eichel with another assist. Then at 3:58, Eichel was hauled down on a breakaway and the referee pointed to center ice.
Penalty shot.
Eichel went backhand-forehand and beat Bobrovsky clean. 3-3. T-Mobile Arena went from nervous to electric in about four seconds.
That's 3 goals and 9 assists — 12 points — through five games. He's not just hot. He's playing like the best player in the Western Conference right now, and it's not particularly close.
The penalty shot goal was his third of the season. He also has nine assists. He's averaging 2.4 points per game. The Maple Leafs had no answer for him all night — he played 26:38, went 45% in the faceoff circle, put 6 shots on net, and was a +2.
Overtime and the Shootout
Neither team scored in OT. Vegas had the better of it — 43 shots on Bobrovsky for the game, which is a number that tells you everything about how the second and third periods went — but Bobrovsky was excellent. 40 saves on 43 shots (.930). He kept Toronto in it.
The shootout went five rounds. Connelly scored in round one for Vegas. Marchenko scored for Toronto in round one. Eichel went wide right in round two — his only real miss of the night. Matthews went backhand on Hill in round four and Hill stopped it. Connelly's backhand winner in round five ended it.
Trevor Connelly now has the shootout winner and two goals in the Seattle game. He's quietly having a strong start to the season.
Hill Is Playing Like He Wants the Job
Adin Hill started last night and played hockey against one of the best offensive teams in the East who happen to have one of the best goalies ever as their netminder. He gave up three goals in nine minutes and then stopped everything for the next 55. He stopped Matthews in the shootout when the game was on the line.
That's not a backup performance. That's a goalie who knows what he's doing and wants you to know it too.
The Golden Knights have a real two-goalie situation. Hill is going to keep making it impossible to give Hart all the starts.
What 4-1 Looks Like
Vegas was down 3-0 on home ice and came back to win. Eichel scored on a penalty shot. Hill held the fort after a rough start. Connelly won it in the shootout.
This team knows how to win different kinds of games. The Seattle win was a blowout. The Vancouver win was a grind. This one was a comeback. 4-1 through five games, and the schedule is about to get harder.
